Artists Interrogate: Politics and War

September 17–December 26, 2004
Koss Gallery

Artists Interrogate focuses on prints, drawings, photographs and artists’ books that provoke thought on both contemporary and historical political issues. An important impulse in art that has gained momentum in the current postmodern era, artwork that examines the meta-narratives of society manifests a range of expression from apparent neutrality to radical polemicism. Artists can simply present an issue for thought and debate or overtly take a stand. Work by contemporary artists such as Leon Golub, Peter Saul, Vito Acconci and Roger Brown will be on view with historical precedents, such as Goya’s critiques of the Spanish monarchy in his series Caprices and the anti-Nazi imagery of German artists George Grosz and Max Beckmann.

The exhibition is organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum and curated by Sarah Kirk, assistant curator of prints, drawings and photographs.
