Milwaukee Art Museum Names Assistant Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs

Milwaukee, WI, February 14, 2005— The Milwaukee Art Museum announced today the appointment of Lisa Hostetler as Assistant Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs. Hostetler comes to the Milwaukee Art Museum from her current position as Research Associate in the Department of Photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Her area of specialization is 20th-century American and European photography.

Hostetler completed her doctorate in the History of Photography at Princeton University under Professor Emeritus Peter C. Bunnell and earned her B.A. in art history and studio art at New York University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. Her dissertation was titled “Photography and Everyday Life: The Case of Louis Faurer, 1937 – 1955.” She recently organized, with Malcolm Daniel, the exhibition “August Sander: People of the Twentieth Century. A Photographic Portrait of Germany,” on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 23 through September 19, 2004. Hostetler also contributed an essay to the exhibition catalogue “Louis Faurer” by Anne Tucker, published in 2002 by Merrell in association with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She has extensive experience with New York galleries, including registrarial positions at Howard Greenberg Gallery and Marlborough Gallery.

In her position at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Hostetler will work with Sarah Kirk, Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, and with other curatorial staff to strengthen and expand the photography program of the Museum. She will organize photography exhibitions, recommend acquisitions and serve as a curatorial advisor and liaison with Sarah Kirk for the Photography Council, a support group of the Museum. She begins her new post on Monday, April 11.
