Overview

Family Sundays are lively events featuring kid-friendly experiences that bring art to life for every generation. Enjoy hands-on art activities, take part in interactive performances, embark on a gallery tour, meet visiting artists, and more. Family Sundays events are included with Museum admission, which is always free for kids 12 and under.

Día de los Muertos

  • Sunday, October 20, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Gather together with family and friends to celebrate the beauty and tradition of Day of the Dead. Add to the community ofrenda, make art with local artists, enjoy dance and music performances, and more.

Reúnanse con familiares y amigos para celebrar la belleza y tradición del Día de Muertos. Agreguen a la ofrenda comunitaria, conozcan a artistas locales, disfruten además de eventos musicales y otras sorpresas, ¡y mucho más!

Event lineup

All day Visit the galleries, borrow free activities from the ArtPack Station, see student artworks, and make art with guest artists.
11 a.m. See a dance performance and take a lesson led by Ometochtli Mexican Folk Dance
2 p.m. Enjoy a musical performance by Mariachi Infantil and Mariachi Juvenil of the Latino Arts Strings Program.

Meet the guest artists

Adam Correa

Born and raised in Milwaukee, artist Adam Correa is currently known for his wild-style approach to taking on art projects that often gravitationally involve street culture. His background in fine arts from both public and private schools in Milwaukee combined with the heavy influence of his brother and graffiti, results in work found in many forms, and in many social class settings. Adam is familiar with the Milwaukee Art Museum from early childhood visits, to taking art classes in high school with their Satellite program. Now, as a husband and father of three, he is able to make art that brings people together with a cognitive and positive experience.

Ometochtli Mexican Folk Dance

Ometochtli Mexican Folk Dance, founded in 2022 by Alejandra Jimenez, is dedicated to fostering cultural identity through traditional Mexican dances. Serving children, youth, and adults, the group promotes cultural education and enriches international understanding. Ometochtli preserves and celebrates Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, showcasing traditional dances from the pre-Hispanic era through the post-colonial period.

Ireri Andrea Muñiz Ortega

Ireri Andrea Muñiz Ortega is a textile artist and communication specialist from Mexico City living in Madison, WI. From a young age, Andrea discovered an interest in artisanal processes and inherited her mother’s love for Mexican textiles. Seeing embroidery and other textile techniques as a shared practice, Andrea has taught several workshops in English and Spanish where she has reaffirmed the importance of collective learning. One of her creative interests lies in exploring traditional and contemporary techniques to create images rooted in her Mexican heritage, nature, shapes, and colors.

Whitney Salgado

Whitney Salgado is a Latine digital painter and freelance illustrator. A graduate from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design with a focus on Illustration and minor in Communication Design, they have called Milwaukee their home for over a decade. While Salgado prefers working digitally, they also often work with acrylic paint, ink, and other traditional mediums. Their style has been heavily influenced by Art Nouveau, pop art, and those childhood mornings watching anime before school. Mental health, emotions, and identity are recurring themes in their surrealistic portraits, and Whitney focuses on creating work that is purposely colorful and inviting to help facilitate conversations about difficult topics.

Día de los Muertos 5K and Festival

Forest Home Cemetery and Arboretum
Sat, Oct 26, 9:30 a.m. 5K, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Festival

Enjoy a family-friendly event that celebrates the traditions of Día de los Muertos within the beautiful setting of Forest Home Cemetery and Arboretum. The event will kick off in the morning with a run/walk through the grounds of the cemetery. After the run, the festival presents local vendors, arts and crafts for kids and families, food trucks, traditional music and dance, altars to the dead in the chapel, face painting, community resource booths, and more.

Day of the Dead Concert: Grupo Bella and Ofrenda Exhibit

Celebrate Day of the Dead with this special festive concert featuring Grupo Bella and a performance by the Latino Arts Strings Program! Come early for the opening reception of the Day of the Dead Ofrendas Exhibit, on view Oct 23– Nov 15.

32nd Annual Día de Los Muertos Exhibition

Don’t miss the longest-standing tradition of celebrating this cultural practice in Milwaukee. This is a year of “Bridging Communities” as we commemorate 32 years of centering and uplifting this tradition in our neighborhood and beyond. Celebrate the lives, impact, and memory of the dearly departed through contemporary expressions from artists, altares from community partners and members, and a vendor market.
