With this season of exhibitions and programming at the Museum, we bring into focus the things and people we associate with our sense of home and celebrate the incredible range of how we create and define this intimate space,\u201d said <\/span><b>Marcelle Polednik, PhD, Donna and Donald Baumgartner Director, Milwaukee Art Museum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The season begins with an exhibition that solves a decades-old mystery. Opening <\/span><b>September 7<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b><i>Constable? A Landscape Rediscovered <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investigates the provenance and attribution of a painting that was donated to the Layton Art Collection by a prominent Milwaukee financier and real estate developer. When it was given, the painting was attributed to the English landscape painter <\/span><b>John Constable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but recent Museum research and conservation have brought new attention to the work\u2014and new revelations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting <\/span><b>September 14,<\/b> <b><i>Family Pictures<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explores the ways in which black photographers and artists have portrayed a range of familial relationships. A touchstone for many of the artists in the exhibition is the work of Harlem photographer <\/span><b>Roy DeCarava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Opening with DeCarava\u2019s groundbreaking book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sweet Flypaper of Life <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1955), the exhibition presents photographic series, installations and videos by an intergenerational selection of artists including <\/span><b>\u00a0LaToya Ruby Frazier<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Lyle Ashton Harris, Deana Lawson <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Carrie Mae Weems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The works of more than 40 designers, including <\/span><b>Ray and Charles Eames<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Isamu Noguchi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who employed playfulness and whimsy within their creations, are the focus of <\/span><b><i>Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America, <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opening <\/span><b>September 28<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Set against the backdrop of a booming consumer market and Cold War anxiety, the exhibition highlights play as a serious form of inspiration, experimentation, and problem-solving. Visitors and families will have the opportunity to explore <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious Play<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> further with a lecture series and printed family guide. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conjunction with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious Play<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thousands of giant cards originally designed by Ray and Charles Eames and decorated by individuals throughout the community will be constructed into large-scale sculptures by local artist Ray Chi and installed in Windhover Hall and the East End. The Museum\u2019s House of Cards project launched in March of this year and card decorating is ongoing throughout the run of the exhibition in the Kohl\u2019s Art Generation Studio. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince the season of home is all about our home at the Museum and in our community, it\u2019s fitting that we have an amazing slate of social, educational, and community programming coming up,\u201d said<\/span><b> Amanda C. Peterson, Director of Marketing and Communications, Milwaukee Art Museum.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWhether people are looking to see something unforgettable with visiting out-of-towners or enjoy a night out with friends in a one-of-a-kind party, we\u2019ve got something for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educational programming for kids and families in the <\/span><b>Kohl\u2019s Art Generation Studio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, open every day the Museum is open, will also be inspired by the Museum\u2019s seasonal exhibitions. In October, hands-on art-making activities will center on the theme <\/span><b>Families in Focus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in November, families can learn about the <\/span><b>Power of Play<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kohl\u2019s Art Generation Family Sundays returns on <\/span><b>October 14<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a celebration of the annual holiday <\/span><b>D\u00eda de los Muertos. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Families can remember loved ones while learning about the Day of the Dead\u2019s traditions and symbols from visiting artists, \u00a0through hands on-activities and Mexican folkloric dance, and by making an addition to a community of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ofrenda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. December 2 welcomes the theme <\/span><b>The Joys of Toys<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><b>Play Date with Art<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on October 12, November 9, December 14 and January 11, the Museum\u2019s youngest visitors, recommended to age 5, can drop in with family members and create art to take home and sing along during Singing Time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Storytime in the Galleries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sponsored by Kohl\u2019s Cares, continues every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>MAM After Dark, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the evening social event at the Museum sponsored by Northwestern Mutual,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continues this fall with three new editions tied to the season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guests can get nostalgic with sparkly pumps and clip-on neckties <\/span><b>September 21<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><b>Grown-Up Homecoming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, complete with tastings and fun from <\/span><b>Door Peninsula Winery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><b>October 19<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they can go even farther back, Mad Men-style, at the <\/span><b>Midcentury Mixer.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The evening, sponsored by <\/span><b>Ernst &amp; Young LLP<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, celebrates <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the<\/span><b> Jewish Museum Milwaukee\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exhibition<\/span> <b><i>Blacklist: The Hollywood Red Scare<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a romp through the 1950s and 1960s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 16, <\/span><b>Friendsgiving<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a night of feasting and fun with friends who have become family, celebrating Native American Heritage Month with <\/span><b>Potawatomi Hotel and Casino<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each MAM After Dark event features music, dancing, Wild Card art tours, trivia, a photo booth and a scavenger hunt through the galleries. Admission is $12 in advance, $14 at the door and free for Milwaukee Art Museum Members. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through October 11, docents from the Museum<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will continue to lead weekly trolley tours and monthly walking tours of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sculpture Milwaukee<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the twenty-one pieces of artwork installed along Wisconsin Avenue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Docents also lead <\/span><b>Drop-In Tours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Museum building and highlights from the Collection each <\/span><b>Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and on <\/span><b>Sundays at 2 p.m.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Drop-In Tours are free with Museum admission. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conjunction with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious Play<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><b> Museum Store<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will create a temporary retail space offering clocks, building blocks, toys, home decor items and miniature furniture inspired by midcentury designs in the exhibition. On <\/span><b>November 25<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the store will participate in the nationwide <\/span><b>Museum Store Sunday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an annual event offering special shopping experiences and uniquely curated gifts with trunk shows, discounts, and free gift wrapping. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Milwaukee Art Museum will again co-sponsor the <\/span><b>Art &amp; Artists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series at the <\/span><b>Milwaukee Film Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking place <\/span><b>October 18 through November 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The series highlights a variety of art forms in addition to the art of filmmaking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Yoga @ the Museum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sponsored by <\/span><b>PNC Bank<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and presented by omTownYogis, continues, on <\/span><b>September 22<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>October 20<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>November 17<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>December 15<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yoga fans of any skill level can reserve a space under the wings overlooking Lake Michigan with a $15 donation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to <\/span><b>Meijer,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> admission to the Milwaukee Art Museum is free on the first Thursday of each month for individuals and families, excluding group and school tours.
