{"id":4912,"date":"2018-08-06T14:34:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T19:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mam.org\/info\/pressroom\/?p=4912"},"modified":"2018-08-07T14:43:15","modified_gmt":"2018-08-07T19:43:15","slug":"black-artists-perspectives-of-family-community-celebrated-in-new-exhibition-at-milwaukee-art-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mam.org\/info\/pressroom\/2018\/08\/black-artists-perspectives-of-family-community-celebrated-in-new-exhibition-at-milwaukee-art-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Artists\u2019 Perspectives of Family, Community Celebrated in New Exhibition at Milwaukee Art Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u201cFamily Pictures\u201d presents photographs, installations and videos by black artists inspired by the work of Roy DeCarava \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Milwaukee, Wis. \u2013 August 6, 2018 \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The<\/span><b> Milwaukee Art Museum <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presents <\/span><b><i>Family Pictures<\/i><\/b><b> September 14, 2018, through January 20, 2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an exhibition that explores the ways in which contemporary black photographers and artists have portrayed a range of familial relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Museum\u2019s collection has great strength in twentieth-century American photography,\u201d said <\/span><b>Herzfeld Curator of Photography and Media Arts Lisa Sutcliffe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family Pictures<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers an opportunity to present a more inclusive American story in relation to how we envision the family through diverse artistic perspectives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he work of <\/span><b>Roy DeCarava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (American, 1919-2009) is a touchstone for the exhibition. Coming of age in Harlem during the 1940s, DeCarava reacted against what he saw as superficial stereotypes and \u201csociological\u201d studies of his neighborhood by mostly white outsiders. With the aid of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1952, the artist set out to create expressive photographs of life in his community. In 1955, he published 140 pictures, along with text by Langston Hughes, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sweet Flypaper of Life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a fictional family album that captures genuine moments of domestic life in Harlem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opening with Roy DeCarava and Langston Hughes\u2019s groundbreaking 1955 book<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the exhibition gathers photographic series, installations, and videos by an intergenerational group of artists, including<\/span><b> LaToya Ruby Frazier<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Lyle Ashton Harris, Deana Lawson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Carrie Mae Weems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
