{"id":2599,"date":"2011-09-18T11:00:36","date_gmt":"2011-09-18T17:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mam.org\/info\/pressroom\/?p=2599"},"modified":"2019-03-05T13:36:20","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T19:36:20","slug":"exhibition-of-taryn-simon-photographs-coming-to-milwaukee-art-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mam.org\/info\/pressroom\/2011\/09\/exhibition-of-taryn-simon-photographs-coming-to-milwaukee-art-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"First-Ever Taryn Simon Survey Now Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Milwaukee Art Museum originates Taryn Simon survey of three major projects<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Artist to visit Museum on Saturday, November 19<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Milwaukee, Wis. \u2013\u00a0<\/strong> The Milwaukee Art Museum will originate an exhibition of work by New York\u2013based photographer Taryn Simon this Thursday, September 22, 2011.\u00a0 Simon\u2019s photographs and writings\u2014the result of a long process of research and investigation\u2014present a dizzying array of visual and verbal information.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition, <a title=\"Taryn Simon exhibition homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/mam.org\/exhibitions\/details\/taryn-simon.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Taryn Simon: Photographs and Texts<\/em><\/a>, is a selective overview of\u00a0three major projects Simon executed between 2002 and 2010. Collectively displayed, they underscore the invisible space between language and the visual world\u2014a space in which translation and disorientation continually occur.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<em>The Innocents<\/em> (2002) questions photography\u2019s function as a credible eyewitness and arbiter of justice through portraits of individuals who were convicted of violent crimes they did not commit.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<em>An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar<\/em> (2007) comprises photographs and texts revealing objects and sites that are integral to America\u2019s foundation, mythology, or daily functioning but remain inaccessible or unknown to the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<em>Contraband<\/em> (2010) consists of 1,075 images depicting items detained or seized from passengers entering the United States from abroad over a five-day period, indexed and installed according to their official classification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimon is one of today\u2019s most celebrated young artists. By highlighting the precarious and often unreliable seams between photographic imagery, textual material, and definitive knowledge, Simon\u2019s art draws attention to\u00a0 habits of inference and judgment,\u201d said Lisa Hostetler, curator of photographs for the Milwaukee Art Museum. \u201cWhile her seductively beautiful photographs attract the eye, the accompanying texts disclose unexpected\u2014sometimes shocking\u2014details about the subject of the picture. Given a contemporary world rife with images and information, her work speaks to issues that affect us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon&#8217;s photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo shows at: Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; and the 54th Venice Biennale. Her photography and writing have been featured in numerous publications and broadcasts including the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker, Ted.com, CNN, BBC, and Frontline.<\/p>\n<p>Simon will be in Milwaukee on <a title=\"Artist Talk information\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mam.org\/calendar\/events\/index.php?com=detail&amp;eID=2746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saturday, November 19 for a special Artist Talk and book signing at the Museum<\/a>. The event begins at 1:30 p.m. and is free with Museum admission.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Taryn Simon exhibition homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/mam.org\/exhibitions\/details\/taryn-simon.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Taryn Simon: Photographs and Texts<\/em><\/a> runs September 22, 2011, through January 1, 2012. It then travels to the Moscow Multimedia Art Museum from January 20 through February 19, 2012, and to the Helsinki Art Museum from March 9 through May 6, 2012.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sponsored by the Herzfeld Foundation, with additional support from Madeleine and David Lubar, Christine A.
