Rineke Dijkstra: Rehearsals

Leading contemporary artist Rineke Dijkstra is internationally praised for her elegant and sensitive photographic and video work. Rineke Dijkstra: Rehearsals features two of the Dutch artist’s large-scale video installations—portraits of young dancers during the precious years of early adolescence. Both videos are of intensive rehearsals in Russia and reveal complex layers of determination and fragility as the girls attempt to conceal their emotions and perfect their craft. Dijkstra seeks to capture her subjects as they begin to build their own identities and present themselves in the way they wish to be perceived. The installations on view were originally produced for Manifesta, the European biennial of contemporary art, in 2014.
