Free Day + Celebration: Freedom!
June 6, 10:00 am–8:00 pm
Join us at the intersection of Pride and Juneteenth for a Free Day + Celebration in support of a more inclusive Milwaukee. Celebrate Black and LGBTQIA+ communities and freedom through campus-wide activities featuring artists and experts. Come as you are to enjoy free Museum admission and all-ages fun, including art making, music, and yoga.
Event Lineup
Art Making | 10 AM–6:30 PM
Ignite your imaginative side in two different art-making zones. In the studio, make a project inspired by Sam Gilliam’s draped canvas. In the Milwaukee Room, get creative with guest facilitator Blessing Clark, founder of A Peace of Abundance.
Community Engagement Fair | 10 AM–6 PM
Meet several art organizations from across Milwaukee supporting freedom and amplifying LGBTQIA+ and Black communities.
Sound Healing | 10 AM–3 PM
Enjoy a meditative and liberating experience with singing bowls led by Melissa Blue Muhammad in the Kohl’s Haitian Gallery.
Film Screening | 10:30 AM–4:30 PM

He Do Yoga: Freedom Break | NOON–1 PM
Be reminded of the liberatory potential of movement and rest in this yoga session led by Lorenzo Edwards, founder of He Do Yoga.
Live DJ | 1–6 PM
Groove to the music of DJ Bizzon (1–3 p.m.) and DJ DRiPSweat (3–6 p.m.) in Windhover Hall.
Drop-In Tour* | 3–4 PM
Join Amy Kirschke, Barbara Brown Lee Senior Director of Learning and Engagement, for a tour of works in the collection that highlight freedom, including artworks by LGBTQIA+ and Black artists.
Guest Gallery Talk* | 5–6 PM
Join Ck Ledesma, Milwaukee Artist of the Year (2022) and Mary L. Nohl Fellow (2020), for a guest gallery talk exploring the theme of freedom.
Lecture* | 6:15–7:15 PM
Take a seat in Lubar Auditorium and hear from curator Valerie Cassel Oliver as she delves into Sam Gilliam’s visionary approach to art making.

Visiting for the first time? Please follow these Museum guidelines.
-Stay an arm’s length away from the art.
-Finish food and drinks, including water, before entering the galleries.
-Store umbrellas, large bags, backpacks, and water bottles in a locker.
-Strollers are welcome in the galleries. Wagons must be stored in the coatroom.
-Take photos without flash, stabilizers, or tripods.
Free Day + Celebration events welcome large crowds and feature lively activities, creating an atmosphere that some visitors may find overstimulating. Quieter seating areas are available throughout the Museum, including in the East End and the Kohl’s Haitian Gallery. Our friendly museum staff are here to assist you throughout your visit.
