Gallery Talk: Photography and Geology

Tuesday, July 10, 2018, 1:30 PM

Explore how photography in the nineteenth century helped bring the natural wonders of America to the attention of the country and the world, in Photographing Nature's Cathedrals, with Ariel Pate, Assistant Curator of Photography.

Whereas photographs capture just a few minutes or seconds of a given scene, rocks capture millennia. In the 19th century, the known age of the Earth went from 400 to millions of years old. Ariel Pate, assistant curator of photography, and UWM Department of Geosciences faculty members Dr. Julia Bowles and Dr. Dyanna M. Czeck will give a tour focusing on the impact of these photographs on the study of geology.
