Kohl’s Family Sundays: Holiday Edition
Celebrate the winter holiday season with the Milwaukee Art Museum in this special version of our popular family event: Kohl’s Family Sundays. Follow along with videos to create thoughtful homemade gifts and decorations. Enjoy music, learn to make winter treats, and see creations by local students. We want to see what YOU make! Make Art!
Join Museum educators for a trip through the galleries, and make projects inspired by the Museum’s collection of decorative arts.
Renaissance-Inspired Clocks
Explore German Renaissance clocks with Emily, then sculpt your own version using boxes and found objects.
Materials: small boxes, white scrap paper, pipe cleaners, small found objects (beads, bottle lids, sticks), white glue, paintbrush and gold paint (optional)
Paper Bead Necklace
Take a closer look at jewelry in the Museum’s collection with Dianne, then learn to make beads from strips of paper.
Materials: paper strips (wrapping paper, printer paper, junk mail, newspapers), white glue, straws, scissors, pencil, ruler, string or cord, markers (optional)
Colorful Suncatcher
Look at colorful glass art with Brett, then create a light-catching composition.
Materials: tissue paper, clear packing tape, string, scissors, permanent marker
Music
At Milwaukee’s Jazz Gallery, Kai Simone performs a short story titled “Love’s Holiday,” followed by the song “Christmas with You” by Corey Henry.
Holiday Treats
Learn how to make festive holiday treats from Adija Greer-Smith, baker and owner at Confectionately Yours. Watch as she makes sweet potato pie, inspired by her grandmother, and demonstrates how to make candy apples.
Youth Voices
Student artists from the community share their creations inspired by decorative arts.
Honey Creek Elementary Student Art Showcase
Ms. Kassens’s third to fifth grade art students display their woven artworks and yarn paintings.
Messmer Saint Rose Student Art Showcase
Ranging from third to eighth grade, students of Ms. Hardie’s exhibit a range of mixed-media creations using papier-mâché, cement casting, and paint.
