Calling all young art enthusiasts! Build on your love of art and making things, in Museum summer camps. Be inspired by the Milwaukee Art Museum’s feature exhibitions and Collection. Explore the art in the galleries during fun-filled, interactive tours, and make your own creations in hands-on projects in the Kohl’s Art Generation Studio. Painting and Drawing Milwaukee Art Museum
Discover the wide range of subjects that have influenced painters through the ages as you make drawings right in front of masterworks in the Museum! Explore still lifes, portraits, interior spaces, landscapes, and more! Try the traditional method of stretching a canvas over a wooden frame, work with acrylic paints, and experiment with pencil and charcoal.

Instrument and Art Exploration Camp Milwaukee Art Museum and Wisconsin Conservatory of Music (This is a collaborative camp between the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and the Milwaukee Art Museum)
Join us for five full days of music and art! Start the morning at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music for instrument discovery, rotating through activity-filled classes, learning piano, cello, percussion, and musicianship. After lunch and a good stretch in the fresh air at the Museum (transportation from the conservatory provided), learn about the exciting connections between music and art on interactive gallery tours with Museum teaching artists. And explore movement, gesture, emotion, color, and composition in hands-on art projects.

Modern Masters Milwaukee Art Museum
Explore the ideas behind the colorful, abstract paintings of twentieth-century artist Wassily Kandinsky and his contemporaries in the feature exhibition Kandinsky: A Retrospective. Invent your own abstract shapes as you create expressive paintings on canvas, board, and glass. Then attend the Kohl’s Art Generation Family Sundays: The Sound of Color event on July 20, where one of your paintings will be up on public display!

Fascinating Folk Art Milwaukee Art Museum
Make both paintings and mixed-media sculptures in this fun-filled class, taking inspiration from the Museum’s collection of inventive folk and self-taught art. Learn about the history and stories behind the animal sculptures, portraits, whirligigs, and more. And think about art supplies in a whole new way—as you discover the imaginative and unusual ways these artists have made creations with found objects.

Art and Writing: Reading Between the Lines Milwaukee Art Museum
Connect your love of writing and art! For this camp, the Milwaukee Art Museum collaborates with the Milwaukee Writing Project. Half the class is spent making art with Museum staff; the other half, on creative writing exercises with MWP teachers, with lots of time experiencing art in the galleries. Discover artists represented in the Museum’s Collection and the feature exhibition Kandinsky: A Retrospective who use symbols and more to express themselves. Creatively respond to what you see in your own writing, paintings, and sculpture works.

Expressive Color Milwaukee Art Museum
Take inspiration from the Museum’s collection of Expressionist prints and paintings to collect ideas for your own pictures. Explore the creative possibilities of combining different colors as you delve into the many ways to make a print—printing from surfaces such as a carved linoleum block, etched Styrofoam, painted Plexiglas, and found objects. Then build your own art collection when you make a limited-edition series of prints to trade with classmates!

Form vs. Function Milwaukee Art Museum
Discover the fascinating variety of objects in the Museum’s Collection that were made to be both beautiful and useful! Explore everything from medieval armor to Renaissance-era boxes and clocks, to eighteenth-century furniture and ornate silver teapots. Make sketches in the galleries, and then use these to make three-dimensional, mixed-media interpretations.

Sculpting with Clay Milwaukee Art Museum
Explore sculptures both realistic and abstract in the Museum’s Collection, and then try your hand at creating your own three-dimensional forms with air-dry clay. Learn traditional hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and joining slabs. And experiment with creating surface texture while using special clay tools and found objects.

To register for classes, call 414-224-3803. Class fees include supplies, unless otherwise noted, as well as admission to the Museum’s galleries on the day of each session. Registration closes five working days prior to class start date. If you cancel 24 hours prior to the first session of class, there is a cancellation fee of 50 percent of the price of the class.
