Milwaukee Art Museum Summer Camps 2016


Calling all young art enthusiasts! Build on your love of art and making things, in Museum summer camps. Be inspired by the works of art at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Explore the exhibitions during fun-filled, interactive tours, and make your own creations in hands-on projects in the Kohl’s Art Generation Studio. Each class has a different focus and includes time for drawing in a personalized sketchbook. Sign up for one camp—or the entire series!

Painting and Drawing Milwaukee Art Museum
Get to know modern painting from the Museum’s Bradley Collection. Explore works by artists such as Marc Chagall, Georgia O’Keeffe, Stuart Davis, and Ruffino Tamayo. Make sketches using different media, and then use these drawings as source material for paintings. Learn to prepare a canvas, develop your color-mixing skills, and experiment with painting techniques such as layering, scumbling, and masking.

Mix it Up Milwaukee Art Museum
Dive into mixed-media art at the Museum! Discover artworks in the Museum’s Collection made from surprising combinations of nontraditional materials. Learn about folk and self-taught artists who used materials they had on hand, and about contemporary artists who seek out specific materials for the ideas they spark. Explore the power of materials through projects including collage, found object art, and assemblage sculpture.

Focus on Photography Milwaukee Art Museum
Take inspiration from the photographs in the Museum’s new photo galleries, as you explore light, shadow, composition, and more. Students are provided with digital cameras to use in this fun-filled class and will leave with a photography collection of prints that they made and swapped with other participants.

Hands in Clay Milwaukee Art Museum
Explore the many ways clay has been used by artists through time—from ancient vessels to abstract modern teapots and contemporary sculpture. Experience a variety of hand-building techniques using air-drying clay. Try coiling, slab, and pinch pot methods as you create objects from an artful vessel to an abstract sculpture.

A Story to Tell Milwaukee Art Museum
See the paintings in the feature exhibition American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood, and hear about how the movies inspired Benton’s work. Learn ways to set a scene and to develop characters with light and color as you create a miniature stage set and paint a giant story. Even see your art on display at the Museum’s Kohl’s Art Generation Family Sundays: Lights, Camera, ART! event on July 24th.

Form vs. Function Milwaukee Art Museum
Discover art objects that were created with a purpose (or function) in mind—then make your own! Visit the Museum’s newly installed design galleries, where you’ll find inspiration in colorfully patterned cameras, a “walking” cabinet, and a wall of unusual chairs. Design and build your own unique and fanciful furniture piece, a set of flatware, and more!

Class Registration*

To register for classes, call 414-224-3803. Class fees include supplies, unless otherwise noted, as well as admission to the Museum’s galleries on the day of each session. Registration closes five working days prior to class start date. If you cancel 24 hours prior to the first session of class, there is a cancellation fee of 50 percent of the price of the class.
