Discover the problems with terms used for nonacademic art, such as “self-taught,” “naïve,” “outsider,” “primitive,” “art brut,” and “folk art.” These are all terms that are used by the mainstream art world to describe the work of artists who create outside of the mainstream art world. Sometimes the terms are used in very specific ways to reference certain characteristics of the artists’ lives, and sometimes the terms are used interchangeably. It is no wonder there is confusion about the lexicon in the field.
A panel of scholars including Lisa Stone, curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Accidental Genius catalogue essayist, and Jane Kallir, co-director of Galerie St. Etienne in New York and author of the catalogue introduction, will discuss the myriad problems with the various labels assigned to nonacademic art. Margaret Andera, curator of the Accidental Genius exhibition, will moderate the panel.
