Each month features a different theme and the projects are always changing! Here is a quick list to get you inspired about the months ahead.
May: The Printed Word
This month, stop by the studio to explore a variety of printmaking techniques.
June: Abstract Expressions
Draw inspiration from the art and ideas of the abstract expressionist painters represented in the Van Gogh to Pollock: Modern Rebels exhibition. Explore the power of lines, shapes, and colors. Make a painting with energetic marks using traditional tools such as paintbrushes, as well as unexpected art supplies such as sticks or found objects!
Special hours during Lakefront Festival of Art (June 19–21): Fri–Sat, 10 am–7 pm; Sun, 10 am–5 pm
July: Beyond Real
Learn about the dreamlike art of the Surrealists, informed by the artworks in the Van Gogh to Pollock: Modern Rebels exhibition. Examine the symbolic self-portraits of Frida Kahlo—and paint a portrait of your own. Sculpt an invented creature inspired by the morphing forms found in Joan Miro’s work, and make a collaged “melting” scene in the style of Salvador Dali.
August: Modern Art
Find new ways to create—motivated by the feature exhibition Van Gogh to Pollock: Modern Rebels. Push art materials to the extremes and see the world in new ways! Use thick brushstrokes like Vincent van Gogh, discover cubism and collage with help from the work of Pablo Picasso, and express the power of color like Mark Rothko.
