Kohl’s Art Generation Open Studio

Saturdays and Sundays, 10 AM–4 PM
First Friday of the month, 10 AM–7 PM

Stop in the studio to create art inspired by the artwork in the Museum. A different collection or exhibition is featured each month, and the activities are always changing!

October: Picture Day

Learn how photos can tell a story. Discover fascinating characters in the Photography and Media Arts galleries, and tell your own tale through photocollage, using found photos of people and places. Capture your likeness in an expressive self-portrait, and then expose your drawing on light-sensitive paper.

November: Contemporary Art

This month, discover the Museum’s newest artworks and explore contemporary ideas. Then push the boundaries of art with dazzling materials and techniques! Create a sculpture by tying knots, inspired by the work of Claire Zeisler. Look to Nick Cave’s soundsuit, and make an artful instrument of your own. Go ahead—punch some holes in traditional pottery, inspired by the ceramic works of Hella Jongerius.
Visit the studio during special Thanksgiving break hours on Friday, November 25, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.

December: Handmade Home

All month long, the studio will transform into a decorative arts workshop. Study essential elements of traditional furniture design and learn about the history of American decorative arts while you experiment with carving, upholstery, and pottery. Use wood, velvet, and glass to make an assortment of well-crafted gifts for the holidays.
Enjoy additional winter break hours, Monday through Friday, December 26–30, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. (7 p.m. on Friday).

January: Winter Garden

Head to the Museum and prevent those winter blues! January is all about Nature and Opulence: The Art of Martin Johnson Heade! Take a stroll through the exhibition and escape into the warm tropical landscapes and discover the exotic plants and birds. Then stop by the studio to draw from live plants, study insects, and build a snow-white floral sculpture. Families will also have the opportunity to contribute to a community project for Penfield Montessori Academy.
