Kohl’s Art Generation Open Studio

Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
First Friday of the month, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.

Stop in the studio to create art inspired by the artwork in the Museum. A different collection or exhibition is featured each month, and the activities are always changing!

September: Creating Together

All month long, take part in projects inspired by art that more than one person had a hand in creating. Play games based around Sol LeWitt’s drawings, which are made using directions that others follow to draw the work. Work side-by-side with family members and new friends while building a city with bottle caps—a material Clarence and Grace Woolsey used to make their art—and experiment with repetition, looking to the stacked artworks of Tara Donovan for ideas.

October: Picture Day

Learn how photos can tell a story. Discover fascinating characters in the Photography and Media Arts galleries, and tell your own tale through photocollage, using found photos of people and places. Capture your likeness in an expressive self-portrait, and then expose your drawing on light-sensitive paper.

November: Contemporary Art

This month, discover the Museum’s newest artworks and explore contemporary ideas. Then push the boundaries of art with dazzling materials and techniques! Create a sculpture by tying knots, inspired by the work of Claire Zeisler. Look to Nick Cave’s soundsuit, and make an artful instrument of your own. Go ahead—punch some holes in traditional pottery, inspired by the ceramic works of Hella Jongerius.
Visit the studio during special Thanksgiving break hours on Friday, November 25, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
