Kohl’s Art Generation Open Studio

NEW HOURS!
TUESDAY–SUNDAY, 10 AM–4 PM
THURSDAYS, 10 AM–7 PM

Stop by the studio to create art inspired by artwork in the Museum. A different collection or exhibition is featured each month, and the activities are always changing!

December: Technicolor Holiday

This winter, immerse yourself in the bold colors and exciting textures of Jaime Hayon’s Technicolor World. Create a collection of handmade gifts that combine art and design. Try weaving on a loom with traditional and wacky materials. Play with wild combinations of animals and patterns while designing a playground. Then splash gold illustrations on sculptures of your own.

During winter break, sculpt imaginative creatures out of clay that can also be hung to display. Leading up to New Year’s Eve, you can also create whimsical masks using a wild assortment of colorful materials.

January: A Community of Potters

Create art to share with the community throughout the month of January, as the Museum hosts a food drive in partnership with Hunger Task Force. Families can decorate bowls, inspired by the colorful and whimsical designs in Jaime Hayon: Technicolor, that will be distributed to food pantries throughout the city. Please bring shelf-stable, canned, low-sodium food to donate, and receive a coupon for a free coffee or hot chocolate from Windhover Coffee or the East End.

February: Sights and Sounds of Haiti

Celebrate the art and culture of Haiti. Use all your senses to explore the paintings and sculptures in the Museum’s Haitian art collection; you’ll learn about konbit and how farmers work together, and make a musical instrument you can play. Look closely at the work of Rigaud Benoit before creating a painting of a tradition or celebration that is important to you.
Check out the Kohl’s Art Generation Lab every Saturday in February for special performances at 1 p.m.!

March: Out to Sea

This spring break, go sightseeing on the coast with painter Winslow Homer, escaping into the scenes in the feature exhibition Coming Away: Winslow Homer and England. Try a variety of materials while capturing deep seas and whipping winds in paint. Sketch landscapes and develop a story with dramatic figures. Play word games and complete your artworks with expressive titles.

April: American Vista

Get out your maps; we’re hitting the road. Join us in the studio for an artful adventure inspired by the feature exhibition The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip. Create dreamy scenes of spectacular places around the country using drawing, painting, and photo collage. Paint a selfie in a place you would love to visit, and send a handmade postcard about a location on your bucket list. Collage images of people and places to make an imaginary memory.

May: Cubism to Contemporary

In the month of May, explore what makes art from the last one hundred years astonishing. Take the lead from artists who taught us to push the rules of art. Tell a story with a modern subject, and experiment with making art about art itself. Find inspiration in abstraction, and express your love for Mom with an artful gift.
